What made you decide to attend Morgan?

I always wanted to attend an HBCU and I really liked the feel of the campus. The business program was also very well known.

What did receiving the MLK Scholarship mean to you?

Receiving this scholarship allowed me to remain focused on the goal which was graduation. I did not have to have the added stress of trying to figure out how to pay for my education or how many loans I needed to pay back once graduating.

What are you doing today as a proud Morgan graduate?

I currently work for the federal government at The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as a Management Analyst. I have been at CMS for 4 years. I am also currently working on obtaining my Masters degree at Southern New Hampshire University in Accounting with a concentration in forensics accounting. I am expected to graduate in the year of 2021 and currently hold a 3.8GPA.

What advice do you have for students still working toward their goal of a college degree?

My advice is to never give up. I know sometimes you may feel defeated but always remember that you chose to be on this journey for a reason and that is to further your education. Throughout my education process, I always had to remind myself that if it was easy, then everybody would do it. Take on the challenge, accept the challenge, and sooner than you know it, you will be on your last semester wondering where did the time go. Keep pushing forward!

What made Morgan stand out for me was the atmosphere and the way I was treated like family when I first visited.

The scholarship meant I was able to continue my journey at Morgan. My father was paying for two tuitions since my little brother started college as well, this was a great help for my family.

Today I currently work as a Freelance Graphic Designer and I’ve been accepted into the University of Baltimore MFA program for 2021.

What advice do you have for students still working toward their goal of a college degree?

To the students still working to earn their degree I would recommend having a reliable support system of friends and faculty members to help you through situations inside the classroom and out. I would also say to remember to take care of yourself and keep your peace.

Michael Faulkner

Graduation: 2016

Hometown: Pikesville, Maryland

What made you decide to attend Morgan?

Maryland born, but raised overseas for 12 years of my life, I always had a desire to go back home. After visiting Morgan State University in 2011 I knew that’s where I wanted to attend. The engineering program produced skillful black professionals, the Morgan pride was strong, and I wanted to indulge myself in the heritage and culture that I wouldn’t experience at a non HBCU.

What did receiving the MLK Scholarship mean to you?

The MLK Scholarship served as an important stepping stone that put me one step closer to earning a degree from Morgan State University. It provided me that edge I needed to alleviate my remaining financial struggles, not to mention the connections developed through the scholarship. Knowing the importance of the scholarship, I owe it to current students to also contribute so they too can reap the benefits.

What are you doing today as a proud Morgan graduate?

As a graduate from Morgan State University I’m putting my discipline to work as a Software Engineer at JPMorgan Chase in Houston, TX developing internal applications. The firm has a commitment to hire diverse talent, and to make sure that happens I take part in interviewing candidates and mentor new hires from many different Universities, to include HBCUs. There’s so much talent I want to ensure our schools aren’t being overlooked.

What advice do you have for students still working toward their goal of a college degree?

It probably sounds redundant, but it’s something that needs to be redundantly heard and that’s to see it through no matter the route you take. Most things that require effort and a time commitment are worth doing for a prosperous future. Just be sure the effort and time put forth are not in vain.

What made you decide to attend Morgan?

In high school, I took a course called African American Studies where I had a “coming of culture” moment when we studied HBCU’s. After learning about the great alumni and history of HBCUs, I knew I was destined to attend a similar school. Morgan State is in my hometown and it met my needs and interests for education, so it was a no brainer for me to attend.

What did receiving the MLK Scholarship mean to you?

The MLK Scholarship means more than words can explain. As a college student from a single parent home, the generous donations allotted me an opportunity of a lifetime…receiving an education from Morgan State without the financial strain. With this scholarship, I was able to take on less student loans, stay enrolled in my courses, participate in study abroad opportunities and internships but above all I was able to make a legacy at Morgan State and beyond that I know my family, the donors, and my future kids/grandkids are proud of. I am forever grateful and inspired by the journeys and sacrifices of those who came before me. Many, many thanks to the donors!

What are you doing today as a proud Morgan graduate?

After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising from Morgan State, I obtained a Master’s degree in Globalization and Development Communications from Temple University in 2018. I currently work as a Communications Specialist on a contract for the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through The Bizzell Group (Bizzell). Bizzell is a Black-owned, multi-million dollar, management consulting firm for government agencies. There, I support communications initiatives and media projects focused on federal, state, local and global programs.

Prior to Bizzell, I served as a Media Relations specialist for Johns Hopkins Medicine. I led a media campaign plan for the nation’s first HIV-to-HIV kidney transplant with a living donor. My efforts garnered over 900 news stories in top tier national, and global media outlets such as the Washington Post, Fox News, and CNN, within a month of the announcement going public.

I also served as a Strategic Planning Trainee for the Federal Housing Finance Agency in Washington, D.C. I also completed a Communications Internship with a focus on social change and welfare at the Baltimore City Department of Social Services.

What advice do you have for students still working toward their goal of a college degree?

My mentor once told me that “your work ethic must match your dream.” That is the same thing I tell my mentees. You are going to encounter sleepless nights, a bad grade or two, a “no” for that internship, but you cannot give up. Each challenge is just a stepping stone to your next victory. You must keep going and do good work! Try to excel in all that you do, even if it gets hard…take a moment to reflect but keep excelling. In my experience, a strong work ethic and quality work are the keys to success and obtaining the life you want. You are counting on you!
